Mio Reynolds is an illustrator and painter born and raised in Toronto. Having a passion for art at a young age, Mio has and continues to explore art-making through various mediums such as watercolour, photography, digital illustration, animation, comic-making, and painting. She studied Illustration at OCAD University and recently graduated in 2024. Using her own candid photography as inspiration, Mioβs oil and acrylic paintings explore the relationship between the individual and their environment. She strives to reveal how these quiet moments of simply existing reflect the complexity of being alone. These portraits portray the tension between solitude and connectedness to our world, and how it influences our identity.
Q+A
Why is art important to you?
I can't imagine my life without art, or the world without art. I believe everyone has the ability to be creative, and that's why I have an appreciation for all forms of art, whether that be music, dance, or literature.
When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...
Watching movies, spending time with friends, and brainstorming about what to create next
Favourite medium
Though I enjoy acrylic and digital very much due to it's minimal clean-up, I have a soft spot for watercolor because it's what I would use when I would paint flowers to send as gifts to family members overseas.
Beverage of choice
Tea! I volunteer at the Toronto Tea Festival every year and always buy an assortment of different teas. My favourite has to be Genmaicha. My mother's home town is actually a major producer of Gyokuro tea and it's fun visiting the tea farms there.
When did you start making art, and why?
When I was 3, according to my father. He claims I drew a baby and said it was me, and my parents have supported my art-making ever since.
Least favourite movie
The Menu. I made a video essay detailing why for my final assignments in my pop culture class, and received an A!
